History
Formed in 1836 from Des Moines County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Louisa County was created by Wisconsin Territory from Des Moines County in 1836. In 1838, it gained land from Muscatine County, while also losing territory to Des Moines County, Henry County, and the newly created Slaughter County, which was later renamed Washington County. When Iowa Territory was established from Wisconsin Territory in 1838, Louisa became a county within the territory, and it later became an Iowa county when the state was created in 1846.
