History
Formed in 1837 from Dubuque County and Clayton County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Created by Wisconsin Territory on December 21, 1837, from Dubuque County and initially attached to Clayton County for temporary purposes, Fayette County initially included territory in present Iowa, Minnesota, and North and South Dakota. Fayette became a county in Iowa Territory on July 3, 1838, when Iowa Territory was created from Wisconsin Territory. The county lost territory to a non-county area in 1843 and was eliminated from present Minnesota in 1846 when the state of Iowa was created from Iowa Territory. Fayette County was fully organized and detached from Clayton County on August 26, 1850.
