History

Formed in 1851 from Delaware County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Butler County was created from Delaware County on January 15, 1851, and named after William Orlando Butler. The county was initially not fully organized and attached to neighboring counties for judicial, elective, and revenue purposes: first to Buchanan County in 1851, then to Black Hawk County in 1853, until it was fully organized and detached in 1854.
