History
Formed in 1843 from Benton County and Linn County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Tama County was created by Iowa Territory from Benton County on February 17, 1843, and initially attached to Linn County for judicial, revenue, and election purposes. On March 1, 1846, Tama was detached from Linn and attached to Benton County for similar purposes. When Iowa became a state on December 28, 1846, Tama County became an Iowa county. Tama was fully organized and detached from Benton County on July 4, 1853.
