History

Formed in 1843 from Keokuk County and Poweshiek County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Iowa County was created by Iowa Territory from Keokuk County on February 17, 1843, with Poweshiek County initially attached for administrative purposes. The county was named after the Iowa River. Iowa County became fully organized on July 1, 1845, and became an official Iowa county when the state was created from Iowa Territory on December 28, 1846.
