History

Formed in 1843 from Buchanan County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Black Hawk County was created from Buchanan County by Iowa Territory and named after Black Hawk. In 1844, it was attached to Delaware County for administrative and judicial purposes, then in 1846 it was attached to Benton County for election, judicial, and revenue purposes. When Iowa became a state on December 28, 1846, Black Hawk County became an Iowa county. Between 1851 and 1856, Bremer, Butler, and Grundy counties were organized and detached from Black Hawk County.
