History
Formed in 1837 from Dubuque County and Jackson County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Jones County was created from Dubuque County by Wisconsin Territory, initially attached to Jackson County for temporary purposes. When Iowa Territory was created from Wisconsin Territory on July 3, 1838, Jones became part of Iowa Territory. It was fully organized and detached from Jackson County on June 1, 1839. Jones became an Iowa county when Iowa achieved statehood on December 28, 1846.
