History
Formed in 1836 from Des Moines County and Cook County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Muscatine County was created by Wisconsin Territory from Des Moines County and Cook County, which was not fully organized and was attached to Muscatine for all judicial purposes. In December 1837, Muscatine lost territory to the creation of Johnson County and Scott County. In January 1838, Muscatine gained all of Cook County but lost territory to Louisa County and to the creation of Slaughter County, which was later renamed Washington County. Muscatine became an Iowa Territory county in July 1838 when Iowa Territory was created, and then became an Iowa state county in December 1846 when Iowa achieved statehood.
