History

Formed in 1846 from Davis County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Wayne County was created from Davis County on January 13, 1846, by Iowa Territory and named after Anthony Wayne, but was not fully organized at that time. Initially attached to Appanoose County for election, revenue, and judicial purposes, Wayne County became an Iowa county when the state was created from Iowa Territory on December 28, 1846. Wayne County was fully organized and detached from Appanoose County on January 27, 1851.
