History
Formed in 1837 from Dubuque County, Johnson County and Keokuk County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Cedar County was created by Wisconsin Territory on December 21, 1837, from Dubuque County, with Johnson and Keokuk counties temporarily attached for administrative purposes. When Iowa Territory was created from Wisconsin Territory on July 3, 1838, Cedar became a county within Iowa Territory. On July 4, 1838, Johnson was fully organized and detached from Cedar, and Keokuk was also detached and attached to Johnson for judicial purposes. Cedar County became a county of the state of Iowa when Iowa achieved statehood on December 28, 1846.
