History
Formed in 1843 from Keokuk County and Iowa County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Poweshiek County was created by Iowa Territory from Keokuk County on February 17, 1843, but was not immediately organized and was attached to Iowa County for judicial, revenue, and election purposes. It was then attached to Mahaska County for similar purposes until March 1, 1844, when it was detached from Iowa County. When Iowa became a state on December 28, 1846, Poweshiek County became a county of the state, and it was fully organized and detached from Mahaska County on April 3, 1848.
