History

Formed in 1837 from Dubuque County and Jackson County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Benton County was created by Wisconsin Territory from Dubuque County on December 21, 1837, but was not fully organized and was temporarily attached to Jackson County. When Iowa Territory was created from Wisconsin Territory on July 3, 1838, Benton became part of the territory, and was later fully organized on March 1, 1846. Benton became an Iowa county when the state of Iowa was created from Iowa Territory on December 28, 1846.
