History

Formed in 1846 from Linn County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Story County was created by Iowa Territory on January 13, 1846, from an area attached to Linn County, though it was not initially organized. It was attached to Polk County in March 1846 for election, revenue, and judicial purposes. When Iowa became a state on December 28, 1846, Story County became an official Iowa county. In 1853, it was detached from Polk and attached to Boone County for administrative purposes, then fully organized and detached from Boone in April of that year.
