History

Formed in 1817 from Hickman County and Maury County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Lawrence County was created on October 21, 1817, from Hickman and Maury counties and was named after James Lawrence. The county experienced multiple boundary changes over the next five decades, gaining and losing land to neighboring counties including Hickman, Lewis, Wayne, and Giles to accommodate local residents.

Boundary changes from the Newberry Library, Atlas of Historical County Boundaries; the 5 that matter most are shown first.
