History

Formed in 1823 from Campbell County, Morgan County and Overton County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Fentress County was created on November 28, 1823, from parts of Campbell, Morgan, and Overton counties. Over the following decades, the county's boundaries changed frequently through adjustments with neighboring counties including Overton, Putnam, Morgan, Scott, and Cumberland, with the most significant adjustment occurring in 1855 when the county lost land to the creation of Cumberland County. As these boundary shifts were accommodated—sometimes through court rulings and sometimes through local requests—Fentress County evolved into its present form.
