History

Formed in 1807 from Dickson County and Williamson County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Maury County was named after Abram Poindexter Maury. The county lost territory to the creation of several new counties: Giles in 1810 and 1827, Marshall in 1836 and 1845, Hickman in 1838 and 1854, and Lewis in 1843, though Maury later gained territory from Lewis in 1852 when surveyors altered the boundary line.

Boundary changes from the Newberry Library, Atlas of Historical County Boundaries; the 5 that matter most are shown first.
