History

Formed in 1799 from Sumner County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Smith County was created from Sumner County in 1799 and named after Daniel Smith. Over the following decades, Smith County gained and lost territory through multiple boundary adjustments, including the creation of Jackson County in 1801, Cannon County in 1836, and Macon County in 1842, with smaller adjustments continuing into the 1850s.

Boundary changes from the Newberry Library, Atlas of Historical County Boundaries; the 5 that matter most are shown first.
