History

Formed in 1871 from Dickson County, Humphreys County and Stewart County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Houston County was created from Dickson, Humphreys, and Stewart counties on February 23, 1871, and named after Sam Houston. The county's boundaries changed several times over the following decades, losing land to Humphreys in 1874 and to Stewart in 1909, while exchanging small parcels with Dickson in 1885, 1909, and 1937.
