History

Formed in 1783 from Washington County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Davidson County was named after William Lee Davidson and was created from Washington County in 1783. The county became part of the Southwest Territory in 1790 when North Carolina ceded its western lands to the United States, and then became a Tennessee county when the state was established in 1796. Over the following decades, Davidson County experienced several boundary changes, losing land to the creation of Sumner County in 1787, Williamson County in 1799, and Rutherford County in 1803.
