History

Formed in 1787 from Greene County and Sullivan County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Hawkins County was created by North Carolina in 1787 from Greene and Sullivan counties and named after Benjamin Hawkins. When North Carolina ceded its western lands to the United States in 1790, Hawkins became a county in the Southwest Territory and later in the new state of Tennessee in 1796.
