History
Formed in 1824 from Hardeman County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Fayette was created in 1824 from Hardeman County as Non-County Area 13, which had been attached to Hardeman. The county experienced several attempted boundary changes in the 19th century: an 1844 proposal to create Hanover County from Fayette and Shelby did not take effect, as did an 1871 proposal to create Nashoba County from the same two counties. Fayette lost small areas to Tipton County in 1883 and to Hardeman County the same year, then gained territory back from Hardeman in 1907.
