History

Formed in 1818 from Anderson County, Overton County and Roane County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Morgan County was created in 1818 from Anderson, Overton, and Roane counties. The county was named after Daniel Morgan. Morgan County's boundaries shifted through the 19th century as it lost land to the creation of Fentress, Scott, and Cumberland counties, and through exchanges and accommodations with neighboring counties including Roane, Fentress, and Scott.

Boundary changes from the Newberry Library, Atlas of Historical County Boundaries; the 5 that matter most are shown first.
