History

Founded in 1819

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

McMinn County was created in 1819 from Rhea and Roane counties. Over the following decades, it gained and lost territory through transfers with neighboring counties, including Rhea, Hamilton, Monroe, and others, with the most significant changes occurring in the 1830s and 1850s.

Boundary changes from the Newberry Library, Atlas of Historical County Boundaries; the 5 that matter most are shown first.
