History
Formed in 1824 from Parke County and Wabash County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Vermillion County was created from Parke County and from part of the Wabash New Purchase that was attached to Parke. The county was named after the Vermilion River. In 1826, Vermillion County lost part of the Wabash New Purchase attachment when Fountain County was created, and the remaining part was detached and attached to Fountain for administrative and judicial purposes.
