History
Formed in 1822 from Delaware County and Adams County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Marion County was created from the Delaware New Purchase (later Adams New Purchase) on April 1, 1822, with part of the Delaware New Purchase attached to Marion for administrative and judicial purposes. Between 1823 and 1830, Marion County lost its attachments to the Delaware New Purchase as new counties were created: Hamilton in 1823, Madison in 1823, and Boone in 1830. In 1831, Marion County gained a small area from Hendricks County.
