History

Formed in 1827 from Adams County and Randolph County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Delaware County was created on April 1, 1827, from part of the Delaware New Purchase, which was then attached to Randolph County. In 1828 and 1835, parts of the Adams New Purchase were attached to Delaware for administrative purposes, and in 1835 the county lost territory to the creation of Grant County. Jay County was fully organized and detached from Delaware in 1836, and Wells County followed in 1837.
