History

Formed in 1835 from St. Joseph County, Cass County and White County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Starke County was named after John Stark and was formed from St. Joseph, Cass, and White counties on February 7, 1835. The county was not fully organized at its creation, with parts temporarily attached to Cass, St. Joseph, and White counties for administrative and judicial purposes. Starke lost territory to La Porte County on January 29, 1842, and was fully organized and detached from the other counties on January 15, 1850.
