History

Formed in 1831 from Madison County, Adams County, Cass County, Delaware County and Allen County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Grant County was created on April 1, 1831, from Madison County, from the unattached part of Adams New Purchase, and from parts of Adams New Purchase attached to Cass and Delaware. The county was named after Samuel Grant and Moses Grant. In 1832, Grant lost the Adams New Purchase attachment and part of its non-county area to the creation of Huntington and Wabash counties, though parts of those new counties were temporarily attached to Grant for administrative and judicial purposes. By 1838, Grant had lost territory to Madison County and to Wabash County, settling into its present form.
