History
Formed in 1823 from Wabash County, Parke County and Putnam County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Montgomery County was created on March 1, 1823, from parts of Wabash County, with the New Purchase area attached to Parke and Putnam counties. The county was named after Richard Montgomery. In 1824 and 1826, Montgomery County lost territory to Parke County and to the newly created Fountain County.
