History

Formed in 1822 from Owen County, Vigo County, Wabash County, Monroe County and Parke County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Putnam County was created on April 1, 1822, from Owen, Vigo, and parts of Wabash attached to Monroe and Parke. Between 1823 and 1830, the county lost territory to the formation of Montgomery, Hendricks, Clay, Tippecanoe, and Carroll counties, as well as to Parke County, in a series of boundary adjustments. In 1861, Putnam County gained territory from Morgan County.
