History
Formed in 1823 from Delaware County, Adams County and Marion County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Hamilton County was created from the unattached part of Delaware New Purchase (later Adams New Purchase) and from part of Delaware New Purchase attached to Marion. Over the following decades, the county experienced numerous boundary adjustments as parts of Adams New Purchase and other areas were attached to or detached from it for administrative and judicial purposes, with attachments and detachments involving neighboring counties including Delaware, Madison, Hendricks, Tippecanoe, Carroll, Cass, and Tipton. In 1844, Tipton County was created from Hamilton County's territory, and after being fully organized, Tipton was detached from Hamilton's administrative oversight.
