Orange County was created by Indiana Territory on February 1, 1816, from Gibson, Knox, and Washington Counties, then became a county of the state of Indiana on December 11, 1816. Between 1818 and 1818, the county gained territory from Harrison County and lost land to the creation of Crawford, Lawrence, and Monroe Counties.
