History
Formed in 1811 from Clark County and Dearborn County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Franklin County was created by the Indiana Territory in 1811 from Clark and Dearborn counties. When Indiana became a state in 1816, Franklin became a county in the new state of Indiana. The county experienced several boundary changes in its early years, losing land to the creation of Fayette County in 1819 and Union County in 1821.
