History

Formed in 1801 from Jefferson County and Washington County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Belmont County was created on September 7, 1801, by the Northwest Territory from Jefferson County and Washington County. When Ohio became a state in 1803, Belmont became one of its counties. The county lost territory in 1810 with the creation of Guernsey County, and again in 1813 with the creation of Monroe County, which was initially attached to Belmont for administrative purposes until it was fully organized in 1815.
