History

Formed in 1798 from Adams County, Hamilton County and Washington County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Ross County was created on August 20, 1798, from Adams, Hamilton, and Washington counties. The county became part of the state of Ohio in 1803 and subsequently lost territory to the creation of Fairfield (1800), Franklin (1803), Greene (1803), Highland (1805), Fayette and Pickaway (1810), Pike (1815), Jackson (1816), and Hocking (1818). In 1834 and 1839, Ross County gained small areas back from Hocking and Jackson counties.
