History
Formed in 1809 from Kanawha County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Cabell County was created by Virginia on January 2, 1809, from Kanawha County. In 1820, the Ohio River and its islands were declared part of adjacent Virginia counties, including Cabell. Between 1824 and 1868, Cabell lost land to the creation of Logan, Wayne, Boone, Putnam, and Lincoln counties. On June 20, 1863, Cabell separated from Virginia and became a county in the state of West Virginia.
