History

Formed in 1820 from Darke County and Shelby County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Van Wert County was named after Isaac Van Wart. When created in 1820, Van Wert County was not fully organized and was attached to Darke County for administrative and judicial purposes. In 1824, the county was detached from Darke and attached to Mercer County for judicial purposes, then fully organized and detached from Mercer in 1837. In 1848, Van Wert County gained territory from Mercer County while losing territory to Allen and Putnam counties.
