History

Formed in 1809 from Geauga County and Portage County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Huron County was created on February 7, 1809, from parts of Non-County Area 3 attached to Geauga County and part of Non-County Area 4 attached to Portage County, but was not fully organized initially. The county was fully organized on April 1, 1815, and was detached from Cuyahoga County for independent administration. Between 1820 and 1846, Huron County lost territory to the creation of Sandusky, Seneca, Lorain, Erie, and Ashland Counties.
