History

Formed in 1820 from Logan County, Shelby County and Wood County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Putnam County was created in 1820 from parts of Logan and Shelby counties, with additional territory from Non-County Area 7 attached to Shelby, and was named after Israel Putnam. At its creation, Putnam County was not fully organized and was attached to Wood County for administrative and judicial purposes. In 1824, Putnam was detached from Wood and attached to Williams for judicial purposes, then became fully organized and detached from Williams in 1834. In 1848, Putnam gained territory from Van Wert County but lost territory to Allen County.
