History
Formed in 1808 from Geauga County and Trumbull County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
When first created in 1808, Ashtabula was not fully organized and its parts were attached to Geauga and Trumbull for administration and justice. In 1809, Ashtabula lost territory to Trumbull but remained attached to Geauga for these purposes. By 1811, Ashtabula gained territory from Trumbull and became fully organized and independent. In 1827, the county's limits were extended north to Lake Erie.
