History
Formed in 1857 from Brown County, Rock County and Pipestone County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Murray County was created from Brown County in 1857, with Rock County (later renamed Pipestone) initially attached for judicial and elective purposes. Over the next two decades, Murray was repeatedly attached to neighboring counties for judicial purposes: Brown (1863), Redwood (1868), Watonwan (1871), and Cottonwood (1873). The county was organized for county government in 1872 and became fully organized and independent in 1879.
