History

Formed in 1862 from Pierce County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Stevens County was created from Pierce County on February 20, 1862. It was attached to Stearns County in 1866 for judicial purposes, then detached and attached to Douglas County in 1867. Stevens was organized for county government on December 31, 1871, and became fully organized on February 28, 1872. Big Stone and Traverse counties, initially attached to Stevens for judicial purposes, became fully organized and separated from Stevens in 1881.
