History
Formed in 1851 from Dakota County, Mahkahto County, Pembina County, Kittson County, Wahnahta County and Benton County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Cass County was created on May 1, 1851, from Dakota, Mahkahto, Pembina, Kittson, Wahnahta, and Benton counties. The county experienced significant boundary changes over the next two decades, losing land to the creation of multiple new counties including Stearns, Todd, Wright, Douglas, Becker, Otter Tail, Wadena, Polk, and Pope, while also gaining some territory from Todd and from eliminated non-county areas.
