History

Formed in 1857 from Brown County and Big Sioux County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Rock County was originally created as Pipestone County on May 23, 1857, from Brown County and Big Sioux County, including territory in present Minnesota and South Dakota, and was initially attached to Big Sioux County for judicial purposes. When Minnesota became a state in 1858, Pipestone County lost territory and its attachment to Big Sioux County ended. The county was renamed Rock on February 20, 1862, and was finally fully organized as an independent county on February 7, 1874.
