Stearns County was created from Cass, Nicollet, Pierce, and Sibley Counties on February 20, 1855. It was fully organized for county government and judicial purposes on March 3, 1855, with Davis and Todd attached for judicial purposes and Cass detached from Benton and attached to Stearns for the same. Over the following decades, Stearns County's boundaries shifted as adjacent territories were attached and detached for judicial and administrative purposes.
