History

Formed in 1866 from Itasca County, Pembina County, Kittson County and Polk County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Beltrami County was created on February 28, 1866, from Itasca, Pembina, Kittson, and Polk counties. The county was initially attached to Becker County for administrative purposes starting in 1871, then fully organized for county government in 1897. Over time, Beltrami lost land to the creation of new counties: Clearwater in 1902 and Lake of the Woods in 1922.
