History
Formed in 1862 from Davis County and Pierce County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Chippewa County was named after the Chippewa River. The county gained territory from Lac Qui Parle and Renville in 1868, which eliminated Lac Qui Parle as a separate county. In 1870, Chippewa was fully organized as an independent county, and in 1870 it lost territory to the creation of Swift County.
