History

Formed in 1852 from Dakota County and Ramsey County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Hennepin was created on March 6, 1852, from Dakota and Ramsey counties but initially remained attached to Ramsey for judicial purposes until its full organization on June 23, 1852. The county's boundaries were adjusted several times in its early years, gaining territory from Sibley and Ramsey counties while also losing land to the creation of Carver County in 1855. In 1863, the extinct county of Manomin was temporarily attached to Hennepin for judicial purposes, an arrangement that ended in 1869 when Manomin was abolished by constitutional amendment.
