History

Formed in 1870 from Chippewa County and Pope County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Swift County was created from Chippewa and Pope Counties on November 8, 1870, and named after Henry Adoniram Swift. Initially not fully organized, the county was attached to Pope for judicial purposes, then to Chippewa in 1872, and to Kandiyohi in 1874. Swift County was fully organized and detached from Kandiyohi on March 9, 1875.
