History
Founded in 1776
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Ohio County was created by Virginia on November 8, 1776, from the West Augusta District, initially overlapping territory claimed by Pennsylvania. In 1780, Pennsylvania regained control of the Pittsburgh region from Virginia, ending Ohio County's overlap with Westmoreland County. Ohio County gained all of Yohogania County in 1785 when that county was eliminated. On June 20, 1863, Ohio County separated from Virginia to become a county in the new state of West Virginia.
